If you’re still tossing pickle jars, plastic water bottles, polystyrene cups and plastic bags into your curbside recycling bin, you’re part of a problem Polk County recycling officials are trying to figure out how to solve. Somehow, word of the changes that occurred two years ago has not reached some members of the public. This was clear when I sat in recently on a focus group facilitated by Joe McLeod and Chad McLeod of McLeod Communications of Lakeland. The firm was hired earlier this year to help county officials get a better idea of what residential garbage customers know about the current recycling program and to help craft a communications strategy that will fill in the gaps.
The focus group contained a diverse group of residents from all over Polk County who were among some residents who received recycling questionnaires recently and agreed to participate. Approximately 2,200 of the approximately 140,000 residential garbage customers in unincorporated areas received the surveys. I haven’t been able to get any information on how they were selected.
