Matt Jones to introduce bill to give Colorado’s local governments control over oil and gas

Colorado’s cities and counties would get more authority to locally regulate oil and gas exploration and production within their boundaries under a proposed state law that Sen. Matt Jones plans to introduce. Jones, D-Louisville, said Wednesday that what he’s calling “the Protect Act” would ensure “that oil and gas drilling are treated like any other industrial activity.” “Local governments have a right to plan, zone and refuse to allow oil and gas operations as they see fit,” Jones said, “just as they do with every other industry.”

Jones said he’s asked the Colorado Legislature’s nonpartisan legal staff to draft a bill that he will introduce after the Colorado General Assembly convenes for its 2018 session in January. In Jones’ announcement that he intends to sponsor the bill, he said that if it gains Colorado Senate and House approval, and the governor’s OK, it would:

  • Preserve “the right of municipal and county governments to choose oil and gas regulations according to the needs of local residents”
