More overreach from Topeka

Kansas Republican leaders frequently complain about overreach — except when they’re the ones grabbing for more control. For example, when the Obama administration mandated bathroom policies for every public school in the country, Republicans legitimately decried the move as federal overreach.

But when GOP lawmakers tried to dictate bathroom policies for every public school in the state, they claimed it was a crucially important move to protect Kansas children.In reality, the issue of school bathrooms and transgender people is best left to individual school districts.The public has reason to trust that local school officials will have more knowledge of the issue, a better understanding of the community, and less hysteria rooted in ignorance than bureaucrats in Washington or politicians in Topeka.
